"Well bro.. what you have here is one of the first sets Tom [Flores] made out of his garage. I've seen only one older in person, in walnut, only the third banded Valje that I have seen in person or in pictures.. This old walnut drum had the same bands... smooth aluminum on the thick side... with sideplates that were symmetrical diamonds, instead of this upside down house design that continued the rest of his career... this may be the first set with this hardware advancement in his design. Quite a set.. and to have two.. with stands and a label.. unbelievable.. I would consider working with the top collectors on this one... belongs in a museum, actually."
(Check out Tony's comments about a similar drum he restored at http://congadr.blogspot.com/
There are small badges on each drum that say "Valje Drums Los Angeles." The rings on the quinto are 11 3/4", the conga 12 3/4". There is what we thought were serial numbers etched onto the upper bands of both drums - CAJ783279 - but the current theory is that this may be a California drivers license number (maybe one of you with access to old DMV records can track down the original owner!) The drums are in good condition - no cracks in the bodies, though there are small separations below the rings at the bottom of the shells. The stands (also original) are not screwed through the wood. There is scoring inside the drums which typical of Valjas. Although discolored, the skins are in pretty good shape - and sound quite rich considering how old they are!
